My Leadership Journey
Dr. Crystal M. Edwards
I was the first woman superintendent in a division with 150 years of male leadership. The first person of color as an assistant superintendent. The first Black teacher in a predominantly white school. I've been undermined, doubted, scrutinized, and tested in ways that would have broken many leaders. But I'm still here, succeeding and thriving.
And here's what I learned:
Those experiences taught me that leadership is not just about competence, it’s about courage. It’s about navigating complex politics with integrity, finding your voice in high-pressure moments, and leading with a purpose that grounds you even when the spotlight turns harsh. I faced media scrutiny, public criticism, and intense expectations, yet each challenge strengthened my belief: women lead best when they lead from a place of purpose and authenticity.
What I bring to you:
-
39 years in education (preK-12, university-level, adult-learners)
-
13 years as a superintendent in two states (New Jersey and Virginia)
-
3 years teaching leadership in the DHA program at Virginia University of Lynchburg
-
Biomedical research experience at major pharmaceutical companies
-
COTA Fellow at Virginia Tech, training aspiring superintendents and recently appointed administrators
-
Real-world experience navigating the complexities others only theorize about
-
Proprietary frameworks for decision-making and navigating challenging workplace dynamics
-
BS in secondary science education
-
MS in chemistry
-
EdD in educational leadership, management, and policy
I don't just teach leadership strategies. I address leadership in the context of political climates, social justice, and the unique complexities of YOUR circumstance. Because cookie-cutter advice doesn't work in complicated, real-world situations.
I work with women leaders who are:
-
Seeking their first executive, administrative, or supervisory role
-
Developing their skills as a new or novice administrator
-
Navigating being "the only" woman in the room
-
Building confidence to speak up and lead boldly
-
Learning to manage workplace politics without compromising their values
-
Balancing authenticity with strategic leadership
-
Ready to stop feeling like an imposter and start leading like the powerhouse they are
My approach:
Whether delivering a keynote presentation, facilitating a workshop, guiding a small-group cohort, or engaging in a one-on-one coaching session, I bring warmth, approachability, and a deep respect for each woman’s journey. As an introverted leader who learned to be fierce when aligned with my purpose, I help women find their voice, own their influence, and lead with clarity and courage. That's the leader I'll help you become: authentically YOU, strategically brilliant, and unstoppable.
If you're ready to stop doubting yourself and start leading like the powerhouse you are, let's talk about your leadership journey. Book your free 20-minute strategy call today.
